Class Descriptions
Ballet

Ballet is the most structured and disciplined form of dance.  McGrath’s Ballet curriculum is Ceccheti-based. This classic form of dance increases strength, flexibility, and body control while emphasizing grace and delicacy.  Ballet is considered at McGrath’s Performing Arts Academy to be the foundation to all strong, well-rounded dance training and is highly encouraged for all dancers and performers at our studio.

Hip Hop

With its fast-paced, high-energy movement, Hip Hop is the most widely known, popular dance form.   Made popular by such shows as Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew”, kids are discovering hip hop dance to be an incredibly exciting and entertaining physical fitness outlet.  Using today’s hottest new music, students learn to blend “old school” basics with the latest trends in movement while moving and working out throughout the class.  Hip Hop dance incorporates many street dance forms like house, funk, poppin’, lockin’, and breakin’ in an all-inclusive dance class.

Tap

Tap is the most musical form of dance offered at McGrath’s Performing Arts Academy.  The dance form of Tap focuses on rhythm and sound utilizing shoes with a toe and heel tap to execute sounds.  Exploring several different categories of tap dance from musical theatre/vaudeville to contemporary tap, dancers will learn a variety of tap postures and styles.  Maturing into an advanced tapper, the complexity of steps and rhythms will increase and continue to challenge.

Jazz

A high-energy, multi-faceted form of dance, Jazz is one of the most eclectic styles of dance. While utilizing various styles of music such as popular, rock, R and B, jazz, and Latin, this class is both entertaining and a great work out!   The class will begin with a warm-up to warm the body’s muscles and increase heart rate followed by a stretch and strengthening series targeting both flexibility and the core.  Across the floor combinations, turns, and travelling steps are mastered during the technique portion of class, while innovative jazz choreography towards the end of each class combine all skills acquired throughout class.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is the beautiful dance form blending of lyrical and modern dance.  Combining parallel and turned out techniques with jazz style, ballet influence, athleticism, contact improvisation and popular lyrical music, dancers are encouraged to discover expression in movement and performance skills through this discipline of dance.  Ballet is mandatory concurrently with contemporary dance study.

Musical Theater

Our Musical Theater class auditions, trains, and prepares students to perform a full musical production in 12 weeks.  Training and learning from powerful vocal, acting, and dance instructors, students are encouraged to discover character development and deliver colorful performances in children’s musical theatre.  Past productions include “Alice In Wonderland” and “The Jungle Book”.  Students are educated on all aspects of musical theatre including but not limited to singing, dancing, acting, set/prop design, costume design, and technical theatre aspects.  In the Spring, after the Spring musical is complete in March, students prepare a musical theatre presentation for our school’s annual recital providing ample performance opportunities for our aspiring stars.
